Where not to fish ! Bunurong Coastal Road

From Eagles Nest to The Oaks is a designated “No Take Zone” in accordance with the Coastal and Marine Park legislation. Leisure activities such as swimming, surfing and snorkelling are allowed, but absolutely no fishing or shellfish collection (or other related activities) are allowed.

Best Baits
Whiting (which are very fussy eaters) seem to prefer Pipis or Squid (if it has been bashed to make it look soft and presented very neatly on a hook with no loose ends). Flathead will take any bait. To specifically fish for snapper you will get the best results using W.A. Pilchards, Squid, Octopus, Bonito, Tuna or Pipis. When surf fishing, the best baits are sandworms or Pipis.
Obtaining Bait
• Bait can be obtained at selected sports stores, petrol stations and convenience stores. They sell Pipis & most popular baits.
• Live Bait. Pipis can only be found at Beach 4 of Venus Bay but there are restriction limits – one five-litre container per person.
• Bass Yabbies can be pumped at low tide within Anderson’s Inlet from the exposed sand banks near Townsend Bluff.

The Tides Tide times are published in local newspapers. The coast in this area relates to Port Phillip Heads and tide charts are usually available from bait and tackle outlets and Information Centres. With tidal differences for the bay, areas vary:- Inverloch: add 30 minutes Corinella: add 68 minutes Fishing Licences Anyone from 18 and 70 years old, wishing to participate in any kind of fishing activity – fishing, bait collection, crab collection, cray fishing, abalone collection, etc, will need to purchase a fishing license. Exemptions apply to: anyone outside of the age bracket, holders of a Victorian Seniors Card, holders of a Veterans Affairs Pensioner or Repatriation (TPI) Card, holders of a Commonwealth Pensioner Concession Card coded either (DSP), (DSP Blind), (AGE), (AGE Blind) or (CAR). Inverloch Shore The main surf beach (near Goroke St) is great for surf fishing.

Pensioners Corner (Wyeth’s Bay) opposite Moller’s Caravan Park on Ramsay Boulevard usually produces good catches on the tides. (Silver Trevally, King George Whiting, Flathead, Mullett) The Poles (Opposite the toilets near the Kiosk café, veer off the track) There is a weed bed just off shore. If the King George Whiting are about, try a light line with a running sinker if it’s reasonably calm. (King George Whiting, Gummy Shark, Pinky Snapper, Flathead) Bowling Club (Esplanade) Usually produces good results, especially with live bait – which can be pumped locally. It can be quite difficult fishing here in the summer, however, as you have to avoid beach traffic. (Flathead, Mullet, Whiting)

Inverloch Jetty Popular with kids learning to fish; can be crowded. Screw Creek Accessed via Inverloch Caravan Park. It is roughly a 5 minute walk to the creek. Fishes better when the tide is rising. (Bream, Perch) Maher’s Landing (5 kms.s/east Inverloch) This spot works well if you cast into the channel. Use a fair size sinker. Tarwin River Popular for families. Easy access from the road to the riverbank. The ti-tree provides good shade during the summer months. (Yellow-eyed Mullet, Black Bream, Perch, Silver Trevally) Venus Bay – (25 km. S/east Inverloch) This area has 5 main surf beaches, which are all sign posted. Popular for anglers at night during winter, when fishing is best (Salmon, Gummy Shark, Mullet, Tailor) Bunurong Coastal Road (Inverloch to Kilcunda) Flat Rock & The Caves Fish at low tide with a light line when sea is calm. Walk out among the rock platforms and fish the sandy gutters; lure & bottom fishing (Whiting, Snapper, Silver Trevally) Watch for the tide – it can creep up on you. Keep looking to see you can get back to shore.

Cape Paterson Shore Undertow Bay Between the rocky promontory in front of the Royal Wonthaggi Life Saving Club, and the rock platform under the Bunurong cliffs (Mullet, Salmon) Bay Beach & Brown’s Bay Fishing from the rocks (Whiting, Pinky Snapper) Second Surf Beach If you fish here make sure you do not get near the surfers (Mullet) Wonthaggi Area Shore Harmer’s Haven & Wreck Beach These are two good places for surf and rock fishing. They are adjacent to each other and easy to find by following the signs. Baxter’s Beach & Williamson’s Beach Two very popular fishing spots (Salmon, Mullet) Powlett River Approx 12 kms. from Wonthaggi towards Kilcunda. Good fishing at the mouth (bream, Perch, Mullet, Salmon). Surf fishing at night also (Gummy & School Sharks) Kilcunda shore The most popular surf fishing beach along this stretch of coast; can be accessed from any car parks. Beaches at Kilcunda Cemetery & Tea Tree are two of the most popular, (Salmon, Trout, Yellow-eyed Mullet. Gummy & School Sharks – taken from Surf) Shelley Beach On the western side of Kilcunda is a good fishing spot. Taking of the following fish along the Bunurong Coast is prohibited – Parrot Fish, Bluenose, Wrasse & Leatherjackets. Westernport Bay Shore Corinella & Grantville – jetty fishing available. Tenby Point – suitable for on-shore rock fishing. Boat Fishing Many of the listed Shore locations can be fished by boat. There are quite a few places where a boat can be launched. There are two boat ramps in the inlet, Inverloch and Maher’s Landing as well as at Cape Paterson. On Westernport Bay mainland boat ramps can be found at Coronet Bay, Corinella and Grantville. Inverloch Inlet Fishing Anderson’s Inlet When negotiating the Inlet, remember to be careful when coming or going out on the rising tide. The water can get a bit rough near “Pensioner’s Corner”. Various types of fish can be caught at locations on the Inlet. The Snag (experienced fishermen) – Perch, Trevally, Flathead, King George Whiting, Mussels & Oysters (subject to restrictions) Stevies Gutter – Flounder, Flathead, Mullet The Horseshoe – Perch, Flathead, Mullet Boongas Gutter – Gummy Shark, Trevally Tyleys Walk – Perch, Trevally, Mullet Main Channel – Gummy Shark, Salmon, Flathead Inverloch Outside Fishing Anderson’s Inlet The Bar at the entrance is very dangerous. Do not attempt to cross the bar if you are inexperienced, or if your boat is underpowered. Speak to the staff at the Marine and Automotive centre for advice. Bunurong Coastal Road (Inverloch to Cape Paterson). Check regulations as a designated “No Take Zone” exists in the Bunurong Marine Park. Fishing from a boat can be dangerous on days with large swells, and there are quite a few hidden rocks. Experienced boat operators only.

Fishing can be productive with rock platforms stretching out past the many channels. Westernport Bay Outside Fishing A boat is necessary. On the mainland side of Westernport, Coronet Bay, Corinella, Tenby Point & Grantville are very popular fishing spots. Catch includes Flathead, Whiting, Snapper, Silver Trevally, Gummy Sharks, Mullet.
